The Bald Eagle is very impressive. Known for his excellent eyesight, he is capable of seeing fish from several hundred feet above the water! He is a large bird (can weigh 10-14 pounds, has a body length of approximately 36" and a wingspan of 80-90"), yet can easily fly 1,000 feet above the ground while searching for mice or rabbits for dinner. No wonder we use the expression "eagle eyes" for people with especially sharp eyesight!
At our summer home on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, we are fortunate to have many bald eagles nesting and hunting near our home. Watching these majestic birds during the summer is a favorite pasttime -- they never cease to delight and amaze.
